Getting your oil changed regularly is one of the most importance maintenance steps you can take to prolong the life of your car. Depending on your vehicle and the kind of driving you do, you need to get an oil change every 3,000 miles, or so. Your owner’s manual will have a more precise recommendation.
An oil change is a lot more than just dumping out the old oil and adding in some new fluid. There are a lot more steps and quality checks taken to make sure your car is working the way it should. Here are a few things a good technician, like those found at Russell Honda, will do during an oil change.
Check Levels. Before the oil change begins, the technician will check the level and condition of the oil. This will indicate how well the vehicle has been taken care of.
Drain the Oil. The technician will lift your car to access the underside of the oil compartment. From here, he or she will loosen the drain plug and allow the dirty oil to drain into a pan.
Replace the filter. An oil filter will collect all of the impurities gathered by the oil, like dirt and small pieces of metal. When the filter gets too dirty, it cannot perform its job. So, along with the oil, your technician will also replace the oil filter.
Replace the oil. Once all of the dirty oil has drained out, the technician will replace the drain plug and refill the engine with clean oil.
Safety Checks. After completing the oil change, the technician may do a few basic safety checks to make sure your vehicle is ready to go. This could include checking the tread depth on your tires or the thickness of your brake pads.
The next time your vehicle is in need of an oil change, be sure to bring it to the experts at Russell Honda.
